I have taken a long break from recording and trying to be productive, and spent the time learning and researching new musical ideas. During most of this time, I have been in classes for a B.A. in Music. It has been helpful in solidifying the fundamentals of theory and composition, which I sorely lacked. The newly acquired knowledge has been put to use and I am slowly putting together songs, trying to avoid popular structures, but sometimes the pull to the familiar is to great.

For the longest time I could not stand the sound of music with brass instruments. It wasn't until I sat through and thoroughly enjoyed a real mariachi band while in LA a couple of years back. This really opened my ears. I somehow came across an amazing live album ("live albums" are also not one of my favorites, but I digress) called Boban Markovic Orkestar "Live in Belgrade".

I have been thinking about the role of silence in music lately. It is possibly the most overlooked subject in music today. Many people believe that it is a blank canvas on which the painting of sound is put upon, but its actually part of the music as well.
