Brass: The Sound of the Balkans
Jul 15
2009
I haven't been posting in a long time, because, well, I just haven't had too much on my mind, or anything I thought that might be worthwhile sharing...until recently.
For the longest time I could not stand the sound of music with brass instruments. It wasn't until I sat through and thoroughly enjoyed a real mariachi band while in LA a couple of years back. This really opened my ears. I somehow came across an amazing live album ("live albums" are also not one of my favorites, but I digress) called Boban Markovic Orkestar "Live in Belgrade". This album blew my mind. It's very rare for this too happen. I listen to lots of different music from all over, and this was something so completely different, that I sat and listened to this album straight through with no other distraction. I can only describe if you took the most soulful sounding brass sounds, playing a mix of melodies somewhere between arabic and mexican, and made it all so unbelievably funky, this would be somewhat close to it.
The Markovic's have been around for a long time, and are widely popular everywhere in Europe, but unfortunately, not so in the US. Marko Markovic, is the son, and is equally if not so more amazing than his father. These guys were my favorite for the longest time, until I was more recently introduced to, Demiran Cerimovic Orkestar. I have seen it spelled so many different ways, I am not really sure how it translates. I have had "Pearls of Vranje" playing non-stop. This album is simply amazing, and also equally hard to find. One of my favorites on the album is "Dejan's Cocek". For your listening pleasure:
