With fingers covered in dust and a fragrant musty smell, I poured through stacks of my parents old vinyl collection with many unknown names of the past on covers, until coming across an album with writing I could only comprehend as some type of middle eastern language, but nested beneath the script in English, ‘Music of Lebanon’. I cautiously wiped the surface of the record and placed it gently on my turntable. Never in my life had I heard anything that had sounded like this. I couldn’t understand a word that was sung, but the music and mood had conjured up a feeling or longing for something within this music. That was almost 10 years ago, and my musical palette has expanded to Northern Indian Classical, Persian/Arabic Oud music, Samba, Bossa Nova, Fado, Flamenco, Cumbia and the broad expanse of African folk and jazz. My curiosity has developed into a healthy appetite for exploring the music and culture behind what I have been listening to, from ceremonial music of Bali, to the 60’s Tropicalia movement in Brazil.
